Au Pair stories- Zuzka
Zuzka's Year as an Au Pair
I spent a year in a family of four: two amazing girs and their parents, who both worked full time in the bussiness sphere. The firstweeeks seemed a bit odd but as the time passed girls and I got really close. We could talk about everything, serious and fun stuff; and we could also have a fun time together playing games or doing sports. I also had a nice relationship with my host parents, we could talk openly about things in family and personal things too.
My room was really nice, two closets and big bed with a view of the garden.
During the summer break I spent all day with the girls and usually their friends, playing games or just watching a movie, or going out for icecream after the lunch that we fixed at home. When school was on, I walked the younger girl to the school bus and then either drove myself to college for my class, did a little tiny cleaning, or just had the morning for myself to exercise, watch tv, write emails, or talk on the phone with other au pairs.
I usually spent my free time outside of the house with other au pairs, shopping, going to the theater, or to downtown Chicago to have some fun. We also fell in love with some TV shows so we would get togehter in someone’s house, cook european food ourselves and then watch the whole season of the show on dvd. That was so much fun!
I made many new friends and after almost a year we are still in touch! I found a some very good friends, that held me up in tough times in the US when I was homesick. They helped me keep my head up high. I miss them!
I liked the study aspect of the program beacuse I could see the way young people study in the US and it is way different than in Sovakia. I enjoyed being in school and learning new things and my teacher she was just awesome.
I went to a Junior College was about a 20 minute drive on highway from my house. It was a huuuge school that gave me a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friendships. I liked the classes I tookbecause they gave me more than just knowledge from books, I had a chance to see the lives American students live.
One of the greatest things was the opportunity to travel. Actually I didn’t travel as much as the other girls but I enjoyed where I chose to go. For example: I spent a week in San Francisco with my au pair friend and that city was just amazing, if I could live there I would. I always dreamed about going there and when I was actually there I couldn’t belive it. It was the best vacation in my life :}
